DIY notebook

This little book is adorable and very easy to make. 1. Cut chip board and paper sheets to the same size (I used 8.5×11 paper). 2. Fold chip board and paper in half. 3. Use an awl and poke holes along the fold (spine) an inch apart. 4. Use book binding thread and needle to sew string through the holes. Pull taut and finish with a knot. 5. press firmly along folded spine to close book. 6. Use xacto knife and straight edge to trim excess paper from side opposite spine. ta-da!

I made a book like this and customized it for my portfolio leave behinds. following the same steps, I added side pockets inside the cover for my media cd, business card, and a pull out resume. fun!

What is chipboard? The sheet of wood that you buy at Home Depot???

Chipboard is actually a cardstock, so it’s made of paper. It is very sturdy and works well as a cover for books! I ordered my chipboard online from the papersource: http://www.paper-source.com/cgi-bin/paper/item/Chipboard-Sheets-8.5-x-11/3107.001/34304401.html

know this is an old post, however, I hope you get this message.

How did you go about printing the words straight onto the chipboard? and do you know if it will work on book board?

    Thank you.

Hi Sacred, I actually used photoshop to add the words over the book in the tutorial photo (the book cover is actually blank). But I’m fairly confident the chipboard would run through an inkjet printer. I would recommend printing the design on the cover board BEFORE assembling the cover to your book pages. Book board is thicker than chipboard, so it may or may not directly go through your printer (you may need to print your design on a lighter-weight paper and wrap it over your book board). Hand-drawn lettering may work too and it’s very unique. Hope this answers your question and is helpful. Try it and see what works.

      Best to you!
